What Mildpage does

Mildpage lives in your menu bar and lays a calm, click-through paper texture over your displays, so a bright, glossy screen feels a little more like warm paper. Pick a paper, set the intensity, and keep working as usual: clicks, typing and scrolling go straight to your apps.

Getting started

  1. Open Mildpage. Its folded-sheet icon appears in the menu bar (there is no Dock icon).
  2. Click the icon and turn the paper on. Choose a paper from the library and drag the intensity slider.
  3. Click the sliders button to open Controls for grain, displays, app rules, the Automate tab and Settings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn the paper on or off?

Click the Mildpage icon in the menu bar and use the on/off control at the top of the window. You can also snooze it for a while, or use Shortcuts, the widget or the Control Center control described below.

Is there a keyboard shortcut?

Yes: ⌥⌘P turns the paper on or off from any app.

Can the paper turn on and off on its own?

Open Controls → Automate → Schedule. Choose fixed times (for example 20:00–07:00) or Sunset to sunrise, pick your city or type coordinates, and choose the weekdays. The schedule can show the paper, pause it, or switch to a different paper during that window. Sun times are calculated on your Mac; no location access is needed.

How do I use Mildpage with Focus?

Open System Settings → Focus, choose a Focus, then under Focus filters click Add Filter and choose Mildpage. You can pause the paper, or pick a paper and intensity, while that Focus is on.

How do I add the widget or the Control Center control?

On macOS 14 Sonoma or later, right-click the desktop and choose Edit Widgets (or open Notification Center and click Edit Widgets), search for Mildpage and add it. Its button turns the paper on or off. On macOS 26 or later you can also add the Mildpage control to Control Center or the menu bar from Edit Controls.

Does Mildpage work with Shortcuts?

Yes. In the Shortcuts app, search for Mildpage to find actions that turn the paper on or off, toggle it, choose a paper, set the intensity or snooze it. You can also ask Siri, for example "Toggle Mildpage".

Can I use a different paper in some apps?

Yes. In Controls → App Rules you can hide the paper in certain apps, show it only in some, and set a different paper or intensity per app.

What are eye breaks?

An optional reminder for the 20-20-20 habit: every 20 minutes the texture gently fades away for 20 seconds, as a cue to look at something about 20 feet (6 m) away. Change the timing in Controls → Automate, and optionally get a silent notification. It is a comfort feature, not medical advice.

How does iCloud sync work?

If Sync papers and preferences with iCloud is on in Settings, your custom papers, desk setups, app rules and per-app papers, schedule and eye-break settings appear on your other Macs signed in to the same Apple Account with Mildpage installed. On/off, snooze, displays and battery rules stay per Mac. Turn it off to keep everything local. Changes usually arrive within a minute or two.

The paper doesn't appear in screenshots

That's the Hide from macOS screenshots option in Settings. Turn it off if you want the texture in your captures. Some screen-sharing apps may still capture it.

Does Mildpage need any permissions?

No. The overlay is click-through and does not read your screen, so it needs no Accessibility or Screen Recording access. macOS only asks about notifications if you turn on eye-break notifications.

System requirements

macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon or Intel Macs. The widget needs macOS 14 or later, and the Control Center control macOS 26 or later.

Does Mildpage collect any data?

No. Read the privacy policy.

How do I uninstall Mildpage?

Click the menu bar icon, open Controls → Settings and click Quit Mildpage (turn off Launch automatically at login first if you enabled it). Then drag Mildpage from Applications to the Trash. Its settings live in its own sandbox container and are removed with it; remove any Mildpage widget from your desktop as well.
